Top 10 Plays in Abu Dhabi

by Laine Messier

KidTripster Teen: Top 10 things to do with kids in this family-friendly city that’s often – sadly – overshadowed by Dubai.

When my family moved to Abu Dhabi, I quickly figured out that this city is not only a unique and wonderful place to live, but it’s also an amazing place to vacation. I also soon found out that many people have never even heard of Abu Dhabi. Of course, I have a theory about why this troubling news is true. With glitz and glamour of Dubai less than 1-1/2 hours away, this more conservative and demure place tends to take a backseat. While it may not match the hustle and bustle of its flashy neighbor to the north, the United Arab Emirates’s capital city is truly an exciting place. After discovering all the incredible things to do and see here, it’ll be hard to find a reason not to put Abu Dhabi on your family’s travel bucket list!

KidTripster Tip: Some families may have safety concerns about traveling in the Middle East. However, Abu Dhabi has been named the safest city in the world two years in a row according Numbeo, a crowd-sourced data site that rates cities based on crime statistics. It surpassed over 300 cities including Tokyo and Munich. As a teenager, I’ve walked the streets alone at night and never felt safer. Of course, when traveling, you’ll want to exercise normal precautions.

Exterior of Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi

1. Emirates Palace

West Corniche Road

In a land known for wealth and royalty, why not start your visit at a palace? Emirates Palace isn’t actually home to the royal family, but it is a palatial hotel, perfect for any prince or princess. There’s no shortage of opulence at this massive, five-star, luxury resort. Don’t believe me? Check out the gold bar vending machine in the lobby! While its lavish rooms and pristine beaches are only accessible to guests, non-guests are welcome to stroll through the lobby, grounds, and third floor to get a glimpse of how the insanely rich spend their money. While you wander, feast your eyes on the gold, marble, and crystal that adorns every corner of this place and have your camera ready for some Instagram-worthy pictures. When you’re done gawking at all the grandeur, enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants which feature cuisines from around the world. If you’re not up for a full meal, at least stop by Le Café to discover such decadent menu items as the 24-karat gold cappuccino. Or grab a table and stay for traditional afternoon tea.

KidTripster Tip: The dress code here is smart casual. Women should be sure to cover their knees and shoulders, and everyone needs to leave the flip flops in your hotel room.

2. Observation Deck at 300

Jumeirah at Etihad Towers at Corniche Road

Etihad Towers is probably most famous for its appearance in the heart-stopping scenes from the film Fast and Furious 7. The movie is cool, but what’s even cooler is that you’re able to have your own high-flying adventure at Etihad Towers by heading up to Observation Deck at 300. Find Tower 2 and take the elevator to the 74th floor where the most incredible 360-degree, panoramic views of Abu Dhabi await. Guests staying at the Jumeriah at Etihad Towers can go to the top for free.

Not staying at the hotel? Not a problem! Two other ways to gain access to this luxury lounge in the sky are to buy a ticket or – my personal favorite – make a reservation for afternoon tea. No matter how you manage to make it to the top, seeing the stellar surroundings from this height is worth the effort! Cost: Access for non-hotel guests about $26; Afternoon tea about $68/person.

Entrance to Heritage Village in Abu Dhabi

3. Heritage Village

Abu Dhabi Theatre Road.

Looking at the city of Abu Dhabi, it’s hard to believe that it has only been around for about 50 years. Heritage Village is a glimpse of Abu Dhabi before the modern metropolis ever existed. As you wander through this realistic re-creation, you’ll be able to imagine what typical desert life was like in the Bedouin village. Local merchants display their wares, and expert craftspeople demonstrate traditional skills like weaving, glass blowing, and metalworking; some of the products are available for purchase. Check out the museum filled with artifacts that highlight the pearl-diving trade once prominent here. Heritage Village is definitely a fun throwback to experience, and it makes you appreciate how much this place has grown in such a short amount of time. Cost: Free.

KidTripster Tip: Juxtaposed against the old-world charm of Heritage Village is the modern-day Marina Mall that’s only a 10-minute stroll away. It’s a great place to beat the heat and grab a cold drink or meal.

KidTripster Tip: There’s also a small beach with authentic old-style boats which serve to complement photos of the city’s skyline.

4. Corniche Beach

Corniche Road

The dazzling turquoise seas and spotless sands here could easily be mistaken for the Caribbean, but these picturesque scenes belong to another version of paradise – Corniche Beach. Minimal waves and gentle currents plus numerous lifeguards on duty until the sun sets make this the perfect spot for a family day at the beach. If you plan to stay for the day, pack a picnic lunch or grab some groovy grub at one of the many snack shacks that abound. Public restrooms also are easily accessible.

If you’re tired of the surf and sand, there are plenty of places to rent bikes or quad cruisers and coast along the Corniche’s winding, 5-mile waterfront path to take in the scenic views of the Abu Dhabi skyline. Another break from the beach lies just across the road where there’s a long stretch of greenway and the most amazing playgrounds ever. Cost: Free.

Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque

5. Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque

Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Street

This architectural wonder is the namesake of the nation’s founder and visionary, His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The Grand Mosque is not only the biggest mosque in Abu Dhabi, but it’s the third largest in the world – and it’s absolutely spectacular!

Upon entering this stunning structure, it felt like I had been transported into a scene straight out of Arabian Nights. As one of the only mosques in the area that permits non-Muslims to enter its doors, visitors are given the chance to gain a deeper understanding about the religion of Islam and also Emirati culture, all while marveling at the building’s intricate marble inlays, crystal chandeliers, and its 82 gleaming, white domes. Free public tours are offered throughout the day in many languages, but guests also are welcome to meander through the mosque at their own pace. I think the best time to visit is at sunset and stay into the evening so you can experience the magical quality of the mosque under the lights. Cost: Free.

KidTripster Tip: Both men and women need to dress respectfully to go inside, but know that women will be provided with abayas (cloaks) and are required to keep their heads covered at all times.

6. Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital

Sweihan Road

If Abu Dhabi had a mascot, it would probably be the falcon. In fact, it’s the national bird of the UAE. Because these fantastic birds are such an integral part of Gulf Coast culture, there’s a distinct need for a place devoted to their healing and rehabilitation. It’s not surprising to learn that the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital is the largest of its kind in the world and treats over 9,000 birds every year. Since it’s a working hospital, the only way to see the regal creatures treated here is to take a 2-hour guided tour. Along the way, visitors learn about every aspect of falcon care. Tour stops include the falcon museum, exam rooms, as well as a full free-flight aviary. If you’re daring enough, there’s even an opportunity to allow one of these fine-feathered friends to perch on your arm for a photo op. This is a one-of-a kind experience that should not be missed! Cost: about $29/person.

7. Louvre Abu Dhabi

Saadiyat Cultural District, Saadiyat Island

Few structures in the world can make the claim of being a work of art as well as housing it. This museum, however, easily holds that distinction. Designed by award-winning architect Jean Nouvel, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is a feat of engineering as well as an architectural wonder that opened at the end of 2017. The museum is comprised of 23 diverse galleries, all encompassed under an enormous dome. Each gallery contains an impressive collection of art that varies in geography and antiquity, and it’s the only museum in the world where the works of art are arranged chronologically. There’s a special space in the galleries just for kids where they can learn about art as well as create masterpieces of their own. What makes this place truly different is the museum’s indoor-outdoor feature. The patterns created by sun streaming through the geometric-patterned dome provide a dream-like effect and truly enhance the experience. It’s unlike any other art museum that you’ve ever visited. Cost: Youth (13-22) about $8; Adults about $16.

KidTripster Tip: Visit just before sunset to get some amazing pictures and see the dome of the museum when the lights are turned on.

8. Mangroves

Mangrove National Park

Situated between the edge of the city and the desert, the mangroves are a 70-square kilometer area of protected land where many endangered species – including sea turtles and dolphins – call home. This safeguarded environment is a little piece of natural nirvana. The jumble of mangroves on Abu Dhabi’s coastline is a delight to explore.

There are companies like Sea Hawk Water Sports that offer kayak rentals for gliding through the water which is the easiest way to see the mangroves. Guided tours also are available. If you’re patient and quiet, you may get lucky and see a flamboyance (yes, that’s the correct collective noun) of wild flamingos chilling near the trees. Cost: Single kayak about $30; Double kayak around $44.

9. Yas Island theme parks

Yas Island

Yes, I’m cheating a little here by including three attractions in one, but because they’re all so marvelous, they must be mentioned!

Ferrari World satisfies one’s need for speed in addition to serving as a shrine to all-things-Ferrari. It’s by far the most famous attraction on Yas Island because it’s home to Formula Rossa, the fastest roller coaster on earth. It’s also home to the Flying Aces Roller Coaster which boasts the world’s largest coaster loop and world’s steepest coaster incline. There’s lots more to do and see after you earn bragging rights from riding the coasters, like fun 4D adventures, live shows, and cool car exhibits. You can even get behind the wheel and show off your own driving skills. The price tag for a visit to the park is hefty, but for those who crave the adrenaline rush or just have a mad love for fast cars, it should be experienced at least once. Cost: Youth about $62; Adult about $80 plus additional costs for rides.

KidTripster Tip: Ferrari World is attached to the top-notch shops at Yas Mall, so older children and teens can be dropped off at the park while grown-ups enjoy some retail therapy.

Want to save Metropolis with Superman or solve a mystery with Scooby-Doo? If so, race on over to Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi. This theme park, which opened its doors in July of 2018, has spared no expense in creating an incredible world where dynamic DC superheroes and lovable Looney Toon personalities come to life. Spread out over six distinctive zones that span Gotham City to Cartoon Junction, each area offers immersive experiences, live shows, thrilling rides, and the chance to mingle with your favorite villain, hero or beloved cartoon character. My fan-girl moment was swinging by Metropolis to snag a photo with the Flash! And if all that isn’t enough, every one of these amazing attractions is tucked neatly under the air-conditioned roof of the largest indoor theme park in the world, making for a super “cool” experience. Ka-pow! Cost: Youth about $62; Adult about $80.

Escape the desert heat with some wild and wicked water slides alongside amazing aquatic attractions at Yas Waterworld. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill water park. With free-falling rides, such as Liwa Loop and Jebel Drop, it’s more like a water park on steroids. There are endless options for family fun. Whether you’re surfing the world’s largest sheet wave, jumping on the water coaster or just relaxing in the lazy river, this place is sure to make a splash. Cost: Youth about $57; Adult about $68.

KidTripster Tip: Discounts are available for tickets purchased online in advance. You’ll also get a price break if you purchase a multi-park, multi day pass.

KidTripster Tip: Youth prices are determined by height not age. Child pricing applies to kids who are 1.1 meters (about 3-1/2 feet) to 1.3 meters (4-1/4 feet( tall).

Camel in the desert in Abu Dhabi

10. Desert safari

Of course, when visiting the Middle East, a sand excursion should be a no-brainer. Take a ride into the desert with a company like Emirates Adventures. You can spend half the day enjoying unique outings like visiting a traditional Arabian camp, seeing a camel farm, and experiencing the thrill of dune bashing or sand boarding. Stay until after the sun sets and watch a billion stars dazzle the night sky. Then finish the evening off with a traditional Bedouin BBQ. Honestly, as adventures go, it doesn’t get much better than this! Cost: varies.
